best sheet metal for welding table Here are some factors to consider when choosing the best table surface for welding: The most common materials used for welding table surfaces are steel, aluminium, and cast iron. Steel is the most popular choice due to its durability . Bending is one of the most common sheet metal fabrication operations. Also known as press braking, flanging, die bending, folding and edging, this method is used to deform a material to an angular shape. This is done through the application of force on a workpiece. The force must exceed the material’s yield strength to achieve plastic .

I just received a bunch of mild steel angle iron and plan to build my first project, a welding table. I have 2" for the legs and 1 or 1.5 for bracing and cross members. What I really could use is some recommendations on what slap on the top. I plan to go 30"W * 60"L * 35"H. May use two 30*30 pieces for the top or just one piece haven't decided yet. Usually ranging from 16 gauge sheet metal up to 1/2” plate/tubing thickness. Gross weight of pieces probably max out around 300 lbs. I’d like to have a 4-6” overhang for clamping. The overall plate size would be 3x5’ due to space limitations in the garage.

It looks like it's plenty wide enough to cover opening but is off center. I could be wrong but the fixture looks at least 4" wide or maybe a little more. If it does need covered: One idea is to remove fixture, make a base for it out of non-combustible material. Basically fabricate a ceiling plate about 2" wider on all sides.
