My transfer case is stuck in 4L and when I go to install the new shift motor, I’m unable to get it into 4hi. The shaft turns just fine, but doesn’t lock into the next position and springs back. Hoping this isn’t a sign that my t-case is jammed up and I’m just missing something silly.

here's a suggestion that i learned the hard way: don't change the transfer case shift motor orientation to match that of your transfer case. you have to get a crescent and make your transfer case match your transfer case motor. The trouble I'm having with my '02 f250 is the transfer case will not shift into four wheel drive, and the 4x4 light does not come on although it flashes during the bulb check cycle. I checked the fuses and relays, changed out the switch on the dash with a known good one and took the shift motor off of the transfer case and shifted it manually .
