I bought one of those jalapeno popper grill holders at Wal-Mart for 5 bucks because it looked like the perfect piece of steel to turn upside down, lay over top of the element, then place the smoker box on top. Works great. Just thought I would post if anyone else was having a similar problem. I was wrapping the wood in foil before using the box.
I have a masterbuilt 30 inch electric smoker with the heating element at the bottom. I am a firm believer on smokers with a side fire box to always smoke fat side up, but with my new electric smoker I have noticed that if I smoke fat side up the meat (brisket and pork shoulder) tends to dry out a little.

I have a used 16 gal oil drum that I will clean up, cut down to make a smoke box out of using an electric hot plate and saw dust pan or chip box, also going to put a hot plate in the bottom of the refrigerator for a heat source. For now I’m going to just manually control the heat with an external switch and temperature gauge. Then I removed back smoker box legs, laid fire box on back side and slid down until all 6 legs align. Then I drew my hole template from the inside of the firebox using a sharpie, making sure to keep it level and centered for the final mounting to the smoker box. Then I drilled a 1/4", then 1/2" hole, then used my jigsaw to cut through the back . I'm wondering if an electric element from a Brinkmann Gourmet Electric smoker can be adapted to a side box in this fashion. I love the consistent temperatures from the electric, but i hate the lack of real estate, I can't fit a decent sized beef brisket in this.. Hi.
