I just finished installing a 14-50 outlet in my garage. I haven't hooked it up to the breaker box yet. I used 6/3 nm-b cable with ground. I made the wire and ground connections to the outlet but I didn't connect the ground wire to the metal box .This outlet is on the side of my kitchen island and, because of the cabinet framing, a standard depth box won’t fit there. I'm putting in a GFCI outlet in the kitchen, and I was going to install a metal box, but I noticed the GFCI outlet is so fat that the terminals on the sides seem to be nearly touching the sides of the box. I thought I would just use a plastic box, but I sort of need the type of box with the tongues on the outside so I can attach it to the wall. EDIT, if the box is plastic as above post postulates, it is likely nailed as shown, but the same method applies to cutting the nails. Once you've got the old box out, feed the cable out the back, enlarge the hole in the wall, and install an old work double-gang box. This uses screw-down wings that hold the box to the back of the wall.

Has old wiring, some of it aluminum. I was changing one of the outlets and adding alumiconn connectors, I used an outlet tester and a multi meter to make sure the outlet had no power. The plastic extender would not slide insider the box but instead would but up against the box because the plastic extender is the same dimensions as the original metal box. Is does butt nice and flush up to the box and would provide sufficient depth to bring it outlet flush to the wall.
